Choosing a favorite moment of The Vampire Diariesmust be something akin to choosing a favorite child for executive producer and co-creator Julie Plec. But chosen she has! Which TVD moment did she call her fave?
“All time favorite? tough one,” Julie responded to a fan on Twitter. “Maybe Damon gives Rose happiness right before she dies, then goes and kills girl in road. #100BestTVDMoments.”
Oh, man. Good one. That sequence of events encapsulates much of what is so deliciously awesome about TVD: heartbreak, death, and — most importantly — wildly and unpredictably complex characters. When it comes down to it, TVD is a show about how gosh darn hard it is to feel. Vampires are humans with heightened emotions, and all of them are given a choice: Do I turn off my emotions and become a callous monster who feels nothing, or do I choose to feel it all, even if the misery tears me apart? Watching the characters on this show navigate this question has kept us entertained for 99 episodes and counting.
The scene in question came relatively early in TVD’s run, while we were still trying to figure out Damon’s character — and if he had any humanity left in him. If he ever chose to feel. Season 2, Episode 12 (“The Descent”) gave us both sides: the man, in his final moments with Rose, and the monster, in his brutal slaying of an innocent girl, and showed how they are directly related to one another.
We can’t help but wonder if Julie has this particular scene on her mind because of upcoming Damon drama. Now that he and Elena have called it quits, we’re kinda worried he’s going to go off the deep end, “The Descent”-style. Are you all ready for another round of Damon-as-monster?
What do you think of Julie’s pick for favorite TVD moment? What is your’s? Do you think Damon is about to lose it? Sound off in the comments below!Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET on the CW, followed by an all-new episode of Reign.
