The Originals made its debut with a backdoor pilot on The Vampire Diaries in Season 4, but it didn’t officially hit screens until tonight, October 3. While many of the new characters are intriguing, the biggest question mark so far is witch Davina (Danielle Campbell), who is in cohorts with Marcel (Charles Michael Davis).
While she wasn’t seen for more than a minute in the premiere (Season 1, Episode 1: “Always and Forever”), it’s for a reason; in fact, it’s the same reason she was cut from the backdoor pilot, too. “She would be too much of a cliffhanger for the show,” Danielle Campbell told Wetpaint Entertainment at the CW Upfronts.
Based on the premiere, we know next-to-nothing about her, except that she keeps tabs on the witches’ magic use for Marcel and is basically locked in an attic like Rapunzel, hidden from New Orleans. However, she’ll be let out at some point — it sounds like bothKlaus (Joseph Morgan) and Marcel want Davina on their side when it comes to the battle to be king of the city.
Danielle explains, “She is a very powerful witch who gets stuck in the power struggle. So it’s going to be very exciting. There’s a lot of surprises with her.” She may end up not choosing either side as she grows more independent, Danielle notes. “You’re gonna see her character grow a lot.”
So, what makes this magical miss such a hot commodity? “She’s a witch who has a lot of power, more than is good for her,” Danielle tellsTV Fanatic. “[Davina] is definitely still getting used to her power and it’s definitely developing more and more each day, and she’s trying to learn how to use it.” She also happens to be alone, which isn’t exactly against her will, but part of her wants to be out in the world, enjoying school and teenage things. Marcel and Davina’s relationship is “shocking,” too, which has us even more intrigued.
Ultimately, Davina has a dark side, which will come out throughout the seasons. According to The Hollywood Reporter, her guardians attempted to protect her from the outside world, but she’s captivated by New Orleans. “There are a lot of questions about who Davina is and what she’s capable of,” Julie Plec tells TV Guide. “That mystery plays a big part in the series’ mythology.” Hmm. Something wicked this way comes, and we can’t wait to see how she makes things difficult in the Big Easy. What do you think of Davina so far? Sound off below, and catch the next episode of The Originals on Tuesday, October 8 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
