Actress Ellen Page made a serious coming out speech on Valentine's Day, with the hope that it would help make a difference for others. She said she was "tired of hiding" and "lying by omission." She was scared to be out, but that's over. Watch her moving speech in the video below.
It was a big moment for the 26-year-old star, and it came about six years after she made a much less serious video — a Saturday Night Live sketch with Andy Samberg, satirizing rumors about her sexuality.
In the 2008 sketch (watch it below), Ellen's character comes home from a Melissa Etheridge concert, and gushes about the experience to her boyfriend, played by Andy. “It was so inspiring! And then the Indigo Girls came out! Ahhh!” she said. “And then Ellen DeGeneres did this bit about being in the closet when she was young and I was like –ahhh! And it was so funny and so true, and I didn't know what to do with myself.”
After she goes on and on, Andy's character asks, "Did you go gay at that concert?"
Ellen: "Gay? No way. ... I don't really know what you mean by gay, though."
Andy: "I don't know. Ladies having sex with each other gay?"
Ellen: "I just felt like I was an oil lamp that's never been lit. And now I'm finally burning bright with sister fire."
She keeps going on about the experience, and Andy says she definitely went gay at the concert.
Ellen: "Why does everything have to have a friggin' label? Why can't I just hug a woman with my legs in friendship?" Ha!
At the end of the 3-minute sketch, Andy's character says if it turns out she's a real "les," he'll go gay too and they can still live together. They hug it out and it ends on a sweet, almost serious note.
After Ellen’s coming out speech last night, celebrities jumped in with support, including actress Anna Kendrick who wrote, "Mad mad mad mad mad mad crazy love and praise for @EllenPage today. Congrats to you, you light, talent, and beauty," and Emile Hirsch who wrote, "Props to @EllenPage for helping so many people through their daily struggles by courageously leading by example and coming out on V Day!"
It's good to see her give so much love and get it right back in return, especially on Valentine's Day! Watch her (very different) videos below. Now it's Andy's turn to go gay, like he promised ... although his wife may have a problem with that.
