The Vampire Diaries’ Stefan (Paul Wesley) can’t spend the entirety of Season 5 perpetually drowning at the bottom of that quarry, right? But what will the Stefan who emerges from the quarry be like? How will this terrible experience change his perspective on the people in his life? Paul talked to ETonlineabout the possible changes in store for Stelena and Steroline in the upcoming season.Stefan’s PTSD
When Stefan makes it out of that quarry, it’s not going to be all sunshine and puppies. Paul called the experience “infinite torture” for Stefan and said, “He's really screwed up in the head. Like, PTSD almost.” But if there’s one thing that the experience has given Stefan, it is time to reflect on his life — and the people in it.
“You'll find out that the only way he can sustain himself is to bring about hallucinations and those are revealing to him,” Paul said of Stefan’s coping mechanism. “In a way, he's having epiphanies down there.” Stefan epiphany numero uno: I should stop going to high school.
Any hallucinatory revelations about Stelena? According to Paul, Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are firmly in the friend zone now, and their relationship will be different than we’ve ever seen it before.
“I'm excited for the fans to see this new permutation of their relationship because I think it was becoming a little bit redundant,” said Paul. “They moved to a very platonic place towards the end of Season 3 and to be honest, I didn't see it as a love triangle anymore. They really became friends in my eyes, so to have something thrown in that's totally bizarre — like being at the bottom of a quarry, drowning over and over — is cool because it throws in another variable that can stir things up and maybe lead to a weird new romance.”
As for the other important woman in his life — aka bestie Caroline (Candice Accola) — any chance that his feeling towards her will also change in Season 5?
“Thus far it's been relatively platonic between them, but, again, some upcoming circumstances will cause Stefan to see her in a new light,” Paul said. “I don't know how she's going to feel about him though…”
What is this “new light” that Stefan will see Caroline in?! That sounds pretty promising to us. And given that Caroline’s current boyfriend Tyler recently broke the news that he wouldn’t be attending college with her for the time being overvoicemail, we’re wondering if Caroline won’t start looking elsewhere for companionship.
Are you looking forward to meeting post-quarry Stefan? How would you feel about a Steroline romance? Sound off in the comments below!
