We’ve speculated on how Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) might react to the death of his former love on The Vampire Diaries, but now that Katherine’s (Nina Dobrev) demise is seemingly imminent in tonight’s 100th episode, there’s no longer any reason to speculate. Executive producer Julie Plec has the deets on how Stefan will react to the villainesses’ dying.
“There’s a lot of people amongst our heroes who’ve been waiting for the day that they could watch Katherine Pierce go off gently into that good night,” Julie told TVLine. “There’s a strange celebratory element to it, which granted, is a little insensitive, but as they start going through all the terrible things she’s ever done to them, it seems a little bit merited.”
But there will be one character who is less than ecstatic about Katherine’s prospective passing, good old Stefan, who can always be counted on for a brood!
“Stefan is having a more bittersweet reaction to it,” Julie continued. “He’s been as victimized by her over the centuries as anybody else. And yet, he can’t help but feel compassion for this woman, this survivor, who has reached the end of the line.”
Aw. Not exactly the fated, romantic Steferine confessions we were hoping for, but we’ll take what we can get. If Katherine must die — which we’re still holding out hope against — then at least there is one character who is sad about it. Otherwise, our sobbing at the screen is just going to be awkward.
Do you think Katherine will really die? Are you surprised to hear Stefan’s reaction will be bittersweet? Sound off in the comments below!Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 8 p.m. ET on the CW, followed by an all-new episode of Reign.
