The Walking Dead Season 4 midseason premiere owned the night last Sunday, February 9, garnering more viewers than the Sochi Olympics and CBS’s 50th Anniversary Tribute to The Beatles. The hour-long season opener was watched by some 15.8 million people, making it one of the show’s most-watched episodes to date.
As it turns out, the AMC drama’s success extends well beyond its television audience. According to Forbes, Season 4, Episode 9: “After” propelled TWD to the top spot on the Nielsen Twitter TV Weekly Top Ten list. The site reports that TWD had a “total of 1,240,100 Tweets that were seen by a unique audience of 7,494,100 people.”
Whoa, we knew social media was popular, but over a million tweets about something that lasted for an hour on Sunday night is beyond what we could’ve expected. And Episode 9 wasn’t even particularly exciting!
As can be expected with a multitude of tweets like that, TWD was also trending worldwide on February 9, and we even saw Carl Grimes’ (Chandler Riggs) favorite food — chocolate pudding, natch — make an appearance on the list of trending topics as well.
Behind the TWD midseason premiere on Nielsen's Twitter Rankings was the aforementioned Beatles Tribute which generated some 259,000 tweets, and Pretty Little Liars with 443, 600 tweets. ABC’s The Bachelor and Jay Leno (who departed The Tonight Show with much fanfare) followed close behind.
