Since September, Kristen Johnston has been struggling with feeling “really, really sick” and she’s now opening up about her diagnosis. The Exes star, 46, revealed in a Facebook message on Tuesday that she has a rare autoimmune disorder.
“Full body muscle weakness to the extent that just walking difficult, stairs impossible and I even need a neck brace to hold my head up,” Kristen wrote of her symptoms. “Lying down I'm fine, which is great for writing or killing time on social media (thank you all!!), but it's kind of [sic] disasterous when you're in a sitcom that requires tons of physical comedy.”
The two-time Emmy Award-winning actress, who is perhaps best known for her role on 3rd Rock From the Sun, is currently starring in the third season of the TV Land comedy The Exes.
Kristen went on to explain that after four months and being seen by 17 doctors, she discovered that it was an autoimmune disorder that had made her "almost completely unable to move." “Meaning my immune system has decided to go rogue & attack my muscles,” she explained. Kristen spent two weeks at The Mayo Clinic in November, which led to her eventual diagnosis.
"It's an inflammation of my skeletal muscles," she told omg! (via Yahoo TV). "A pain is something people can understand, but it's not pain; I just couldn't lift my arms, and I could barely walk."
The illness forced Kristen to miss two episodes of her show, and she’s very thankful to Leah Remini for stepping in to guest star starting in the Jan. 1 episode. “I promise, you won't even miss me! (Well, maybe a teeny tiny bit?),” she told her Facebook fans.
The star couldn’t help but get emotional over the support she’s received from her colleagues. “I gotta say, TV Land and everyone at 'the exes' have been just amazing, all of them…so patient, understanding, loving & supportive," she writes.
Fortunately, Kristen is now back to doing what she does best — making people laugh. “The good news," she says, "I'm finally on the right treatment, feeling better & back at work!”
