Since September, Kristen Johnston has been feeling “really, really sick” and she’s now opened up to fans about her diagnosis. The Exes star revealed in a Facebook message on Tuesday that she has been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder.
“I've been really, really sick since early Sept.,” she wrote. “Full body muscle weakness to the extent that just walking difficult, stairs impossible and I even need a neck brace to hold my head up.”
“Lying down I'm fine, which is great for writing or killing time on social media (thank you all!!), but it's kind of [sic] disasterous when you're in a sitcom that requires tons of physical comedy.”
The two-time Emmy Award-winning actress went on to explain that after four months and 17 doctors, she discovered it was an autoimmune disorder that was making her feel so awful. “Meaning my immune system has decided to go rogue & attack my muscles,” she explained. Kristen spent two weeks at The Mayo Clinic in November, which finally led to her diagnosis.
The illness forced Kristen to miss two episodes of her TV Land comedy, and she’s very thankful to Leah Remini for stepping in to guest star. “I promise, you won't even miss me! (Well, maybe a teeny tiny bit?),” she said of her break from the show. Remini’s appearance begins on the January 1 episode.
Fortunately, Kristen says she is on the mend. “The good news: I'm finally on the right treatment, feeling better & back at work!” she exclaimed.
Kristen couldn’t help but get emotional over the support she’s received from her colleagues. “I gotta say, TV Land and everyone at 'the exes' have been just amazing, all of them…so patient, understanding, loving & supportive. It's true that when you're sick, you find out who your real friends are, and these people, along with so many others, like.....Oh Crap. This is starting to sound like a dreadful acceptance speech, so I'll just say you know who you are. Thank you & I love you.”
