It’s tough being the new girl in school, but for Beacon Hills newcomer Kira, at least she’ll have Scott (Tyler Posey) to help her adjust to her new surroundings.
Wetpaint Entertainment chatted with actress Arden Cho, who joined the Teen Wolf cast this season as new-girl Kira, about what we can expect in Season 3B and her friendship (turned possible romance!) with Scott. It turns out these two have more in common than we thought when Scott helps Kira come to terms with some unsettling “changes.” Does this mean Kira is the kitsune we’ve heard so much about? You’ll have to read on to find out!
Wetpaint Entertainment: We’ve been introduced to Kira, and she looks like she’s going to be a lot of fun. She obviously knows a lot about what’s happening to Stiles, Scott, and Allison.
Arden Cho: She’s just a mess in the first episode! OK, so this is the thing: More so than really knowing what’s happening, she just knows information because she likes this kind of stuff. She loves this Asian mythology, but she has no idea that to these guys, this is really happening. It’s interesting because she has the information, but she doesn’t realize that she’s useful. She’s learning with them, and we do find out that there might be a reason that her family is in Beacon Hills, and she’s learning that with Scott and Stiles and the whole crew. There’s a lot about Kira’s family history that she doesn’t know.
I love that interaction between her and her dad in the first episode. He totally puts her on the spot in class!
He totally puts Kira on blast! He loves Kira, but he’s not the smoothest dad, and you’ll see that more in future episodes. He’s very cute and endearing, but I think everyone can relate to those experiences where mom and dad just embarrass the crap out of you. He means well!
Kira seems pretty shy so far. Will she come out of her shell? What can you tell us about her personality?
It’s tough because in the beginning, she’s having a hard time. As the season develops, Kira kind of realizes that she might actually be a powerful asset to the group, so that definitely helps her come out of her shell.
We chatted with Jeff Davis at Comic Con this year, and he told us how this season is really going to dive into Japanese mythology. We’re going to be introduced to the kitsune. Does Kira find herself wrapped up in that storyline?
She does! She definitely does. Kira loves mythology — she’s read books on it — and it’s as big of a surprise to Kira as it will be the audience when the story starts unravelling because she could have never guessed that she would be as connected to this mythology as she really is.
So it looks like Kira gets close to Scott this season. Does Kira get pulled into Scott’s downward psychological spiral?
There is definitely a lot of darkness this season. I got scared watching the trailer! But I think everyone gets entangled into the darkness, especially as we all get closer to Scott, Stiles, and Allison. It’s going to get interesting. I think people are really going to be surprised with what happens this season because it’s truly shocking.
Let’s talk about Scott and Kira because it looks like they’re going to develop a friendship this season… and maybe more.
Being new in any situation is lonely and scary, and then on top of that, dealing with the changes that are happening in your life, it’s always nice to have a friend, someone who you feel connected to and who understands you. I think Scott is exactly that kind of person because in Season 1 and Season 2, he was going through all of these changes and he had no idea what was happening. Kira’s not a werewolf, but she’s still in this crazy city of Beacon Hills and crazy stuff is happening to her. So their friendship is very important. We’ll see what happens with that…
How is Allison going to react?
You know, Allison is actually pretty cool. Her and Scott have been through so much in the first three seasons, and they’ll always have something very special, but there’s some exciting stuff happening for Allison, too. So she shouldn’t feel too bad.
Teen Wolf has so many kickass female characters. Has Kira gotten in on any of the action this season? Because it gets physical on that set!
It does get physical, and Kira is pretty strong. I love that about her. It’s probably my favorite part of the show. We get to be tough girls! We’re not just standing around, watching. For some of it, she is, because she’s new and doesn’t really know what’s happening, but eventually, she gets to get a little dirty with the boys and girls, too.
So now we’re going to ask a few fan questions. If you could describe Kira in three words, what would they be?
Aw, man. Three words? She’s definitely curious. She’s a fighter. And… she’s just a girl. Can I say that? Is that even a word to describe her? I want to say she’s quirky. So let’s go with curious, tough, and quirky. I like that.
Another fan wants to know what it was like joining the cast. They’ve been together for a while, and you’re the new girl. What was that experience like?
I think initially, as I was watching all of the episodes and becoming a huge Teen Wolf fan, I was really excited because they’re such a talented group, and then I was terrified. I was scared and intimidated, but everyone I worked with was amazing. That cast is so welcoming. It’s a really unique experience. It’s literally been a dream come true.
We have to ask: Do you have any good scenes with Stiles coming up? Because Dylan O’Brien is amazing.
There was one scene I was filming with him — and I’m actually in the scene; I have lines and stuff — but I couldn’t stop staring at him. I kept falling out of character watching him. He’s just so good! Completely mesmerizing. But everyone is so talented. I feel like we’re filming a movie every episode. It really is amazing.
Last fan question: Any fun moments on set? We’re sure there are a ton, but is there one that stands out?
I have to say, all the action stuff is really fun, and I’m learning a lot. It’s really cool! We don’t have that much time to prep, but it’s awesome to see everyone learning it on the spot and going with it. It’s really cool to see the guys wolfed out! When I first saw them wolfed out, I was like, “Whoa! This is real! There are real werewolves here.” When I watched the show, I thought a lot of it was post-production, but it’s not. And then watching them fight with it all on — it’s crazy!
Is there anything else that you’re really excited for fans to see this season?
I just feel like this whole season is going to be crazy. So much happens in every episode, that we can’t even keep track of it all. When we watched pieces of certain episodes, we didn’t even remember that happened because so many other things have happened since. I really hope the fans are on the edge of their seats going crazy because we’re going crazy too! For Kira, too, it’s a lot more fun as the season develops because she gets more involved.
They needed another girl in that group.
I know! I think we need more, too. I love all this girl stuff. I love Allison’s character. She’s super hot with the bow, and she gets even stronger this season — and it’s the same with Lydia and she gets thrown into the mix. I love seeing them grow and evolve. Everyone’s goal is the same this season, and Lydia is smart, so she helps figure some of this stuff out. Everyone plays a crucial part in the puzzle this season.
Are you excited to learn more about Kira? Do you think she’s the kitsune? Sound off in the comments!
