Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) may have just rekindled their relationship, but that didn’t stop Tony from getting down on one knee during Downton Abbey’s January 19 episode.
It wasn’t that we were surprised he proposed — Tony’s obviously crazy about Mary — it was just so soon! Not only did these two childhood friends just meet as adults, it’s been less than a year since Mary lost her husband and the father of her child, Matthew (Dan Stevens). Tony, you’re dashing and all but give a girl some room.
That said, we seem to be in the minority when it comes to what answer Mary should have given Lord Gillingham. She, of course, told Tony that as charming as she finds him, she is still too in love with Matthew to consider moving forward. After a “no” sealed with a kiss, Tony headed off into the sunset to supposedly start a loveless marriage with the Hon. Mabel Lane Fox.
So should Mary have given Tony a different answer? Should she have said “yes” to his proposal? That’s what we asked Wetpaint Entertainment readers.
The results were neck and neck for most of the week until Gilly took the lead, ending up with 56 percent of the vote. “No way. They barely know each other!” came in second with 34 percent with “Does anybody even remember Matthew?” a distant third at 11 percent.
Although Tony won’t resurface at Downton in the January 26 episode, we can promise he will return this season. What he’ll have to say for himself, however, we’d rather not say...that is, unless you like spoilers.
What do you make of the results? Think your fellow readers got it right or totally wrong? Share your thoughts in the comments and feel free to cast your vote, too!
