The Super Bowl hasn’t even happened yet, but Scarlett Johansson’s racy ad for SodaStream is already causing controversy. First, we heard that Fox was banning the ad so as not to offend longtime sponsors Coke and Pepsi, but as it turns out, the ad is offending someone else: humanitarian group Oxfam International.
What’s the big deal? SodaStream is based out of Israel, and Oxfam does not support trade in Israeli settlements because they deny Palestinians rights, which means they’re pretty pissed longtime OxFam ambassador Scarlett’s decided to work with them. But rather than back down from her partnership with SodaStream, Scarlett’s decided to step down from Oxfam.
“Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to step down from her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years,” a statement released by Scarlett’s rep on Wednesday said, according to People. “She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”
When Scarlett was first criticized for working with SodaStream, she stated that she was a “supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine.”
And that comment alone was enough to ramp up the beef between the 29-year-old and Oxfam, who wasted no time responding that they were “considering the implications of her new statement and what it means for Ms. Johansson’s role as an Oxfam global ambassador.”
Which, naturally, led to Scarlett’s “You can’t fire me, I quit!” reaction to the scandal. So will we ever see the ad on TV? Time will tell.
