It’s hard to look at the mega-famous, mega-gorgeous Ryan Gosling today and believe that he ever failed at… anything? But the road to success has potholes for everyone, and Ryan’s no exception. Recently, he shared what his experience was like when he was first starting out as an actor — and losing parts he really wanted to stars like Jared Leto — in the new documentary Seduced and Abandoned.
Ryan was just 16 when he first came to Hollywood, and he wasn’t blind to the fact that there was a good chance he might not make it.
“Everyone’s left their families, their homes, their friends, their jobs, to pursue a dream where they know that the percentage of them achieving that dream is never, and they do it anyway,” Ryan said in a clip from the documentary. “And everyone has shared the same dream, and no one’s sure if it’s a premonition or a delusion. And there’s only one way to find out.”
And although we can’t imagine turning Ryan down for a role — and neither can most casting directors today — there was a time when he lost out on a lot of parts he really wanted to more experienced actors.
“You’re lucky to get an audition. Then you get it, and you walk into a room full of guys who look just like you,” the 33-year-old actor said. “You realize you’re not the only one that wore the cowboy hat. Then you can hear the other guy in the other room auditioning and now you’re thinking about not doing it like him as opposed to doing it like you wanted to do it.”
“Then, before you go in, you hear the casting director negotiating the deal for the guy that already got the part,” Ryan continued. “Turns out Jared Leto already got it.”
Sounds like an awful process, actually — maybe we’ll stick with being in love with celebrities instead of actually trying to be one.
