The sudden death of Philip Seymour Hoffman on Sunday, February 2, 2014, shocked friends, family, and fans. The actor, whose highly acclaimed work includes one Oscar win, was 46 years old at the time of his death and leaves behind three young children. The manner of his death is still being investigated, but as of publishing it’s believed to be the result of a heroin overdose. His body was discovered in his New York City apartment.

Philip checks himself into a 10-day detox program. After remaining sober for more than 20 years, Philip began taking prescription drugs and snorting heroin in the year prior to his rehab stay.

1:22 p.m. ET: The Wall Street Journal breaks the news that Philip has been found dead in his apartment. WSJ reporter Pervaiz Shallwani begins tweeting updates including that Philip was found dead in his bathroom with a needle in his left arm and empty glassine envelopes.
According to the WSJ, Philip’s friend, screenwriter David Katz, went to Philip’s apartment and called 911 around 11:15 a.m. local time. David had become concerned when Philip did not show to pick up his children at 9 a.m. Sunday, according to TMZ.
5 p.m. ET: Philip’s family releases a statement. “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone,” they write. Fans continue an outpouring of support via social media as celebrities respond to the news.
6:32 p.m. ET: Filming on the latest Hunger Games installment, in which Philip played Plutarch Heavensbee, is set to continue with the release dates of both remaining the same. He reportedly had seven days remaining on the filming of the final chapter, Mockingjay — Part 2.Monday, February 3, 2014
6:52 a.m. ET: We hear one of Philip’s latest projects, Happyish on Showtime, is unlikely to continue after his sudden death.
9:20 a.m. ET: New reports suggest Philip may have died as result of fentanyl-laced heroin, a stronger, more potent form of the drug.
12:56 p.m. ET: Philip may have had more than 50 bags of heroin in his apartment at the time of his death, a fivefold increase from the ten bags first reported.
