We have a lot of feelings about Miley Cyrus’s Candie’s Choice Style Icon win at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards. Of course, we can’t argue with her surfboard award for Choice Summer Song with “We Can’t Stop” (it’s so freaking catchy!), but it’s still weird for us to think of Miley as a style icon. Our millennial minds can’t tear away from the image of the sweet, innocent Hannah Montana of yesteryear.
We bow down to the new Miley’s midriff with perfectly toned abs any day. Her legs are most likely the inspiration for “We Can’t Stop,” and her side buzzed blonde ‘do is to die for. There are few others in Hollywood who could pull off a furry crop top with a high waisted pleated skirt and combat boots like this girl can, but is this the style teens should be coveting? Her body, yes... her confidence, definitely... her style? Eh.
“I want to encourage you guys to always be different,” was Miley’s message during her short acceptance speech.
Miley is now 20 years old, she’s done with her Disney days, and she’s on to writing songs about doing Molly and beating the street in 9” heels and crop tops. She’s hot for sure, but a style icon? Remember when Audrey Hepburn was a style icon with her string of pearls and chic up-do? Or how about Marilyn Monroe with her totally real dress size and beautiful blushing lips?
Miley is definitely a story of growing up, trying new things, and being proud of her body, but do you think she’s fit to be a style icon? Sound off below!
