NBC and Bob Costas have finally come to the realization that in this day of big screen TV’s and high definition, his eye infection has become too much of a distraction for viewers of the network’s Olympic coverage.
Costas first shocked viewers on Thursday – and inspired a legion of internet memes – when he debuted on the network’s Sochi 2014 coverage with a red and inflamed left eye. But he assured viewers that it would be gone by the weekend. Instead, it has spread to both eyes.
Tuesday morning Costas announced that colleague Matt Lauer would be replacing him on the day’s Olympic coverage.
“Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we’re going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but you’re Mariano Rivera, at least tonight. Let’s hope it’s only tonight” Costas announced on the Today show.
Lauer responded “I just feel bad for him. He looks forward to these Games for so long, and he’s the best that’s ever done it. If he could be in that seat, he’d be in that seat.”
