Sam Champion was absent from Good Morning America Monday when word broke that the longtime ABC weatherman would be leaving the top-rated AM news & entertainment show to become the face, managing editor and morning show host of The Weather Channel.
Sam returned Tuesday for his second to last broadcast on the network where he’s been based for 25 years. He said that “this will always be my home” but that his move to TWC will put him “around weather geeks like me” and how this was a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Entertainment anchor Lara Spencer told Sam he will be “horribly missed.”
Josh Elliot and Robin Roberts noted that Sam had appeared on GMA a total of 1,802 days and did 7,208 weather forecasts for the morning show.
Champion announced Monday that he would be leaving GMA, which he helped make the number one rated show on morning TV. He’ll be replaced by fill-in weather anchor Ginger Zee.
