In Kanye we trust?
Superstar rapper Kanye West is already ever-present on TV screens, magazine
pages, and newspaper headlines. Now, we might just be seeing his name on our coins.
A new Bitcoin-like virtual currency inspired by the rapper will debut later this month and will be called “Coinye West.” While Kanye isn’t actually involved in the project and has yet to comment on the currency, we have a feeling the egomaniacal rapper wouldn’t be too upset to see his name and face emblazoned on money.
Coinye West will be an unregulated digital currency and its makers hope to get the project backed by Yeezus himself. According to BBC, virtual currencies such as Coinye West are often used to purchase illegal items online since transactions are difficult to trace.
“Our goal with Coinye West is to make it easier for people to use cryptocurrency,” the creators told Vice magazine. “Right now, it’s kind of a dark art for people to mine coins.”
The makers have said they plan to give away a number of Coinye to early users when the currency launches on January 11.
“It will get people who are on the fence interested and help them to start using the currency, and we hope they’ll share it with their friends, too,” the makers told BBC.
