Being on the kiddie show Big Time Rush, James Maslow never needed to bulk up — he was always lean and ready to flash his six pack.
But now, the show is over and James is 23 and he needs to be seen as more than a tween heartthrob, so he enlisted the aid of celebrity trainer Eric The Trainer.
“I met him by accident two years ago,” Eric says, “and I thought ‘What a handsome guy, he could use broad shoulders to go with that face.’”
Eric, who considers himself an artist who keeps sculpting his masterpiece, tells RumorFix exclusively, “James is very tall — 6′ 1″, but he didn’t carry that physical stature. He needed a physical presence that represented his personality more.”
So, they agreed to work together. “I wanted him to have broad shoulders and a smaller waist and turn him into the best-looking Tarzan the world has ever seen.” And, the trainer accomplished that by doing very specific moves. He has James do jet reps, which have a limited range of motion to work a specific portion of the muscle, then Eric goes into the engorge phase, where for instance James will squeeze his bicep tight for 10 seconds. “It allows me to specially change the body in a deliberate way — I invented it,” Eric says. “I use it with actors.”
Eric’s unique training principles can be seen in his new DVD Get Hollywood Muscle.
The celebrity trainer says James is “sort of ramping up to be on the cover of Muscle & Fitness,” but more than that he’s ready to be a leading man.
Eric adds, “There’s an incredibly large vacuum in his age group (18-25) — nobody has stepped up and grabbed the limelight and said ‘I’m the guy.’ The Brad Pitt and Tom Cruises of their generation — the person every man wanted to look like and every girl wanted to make out with.”
Eric’s results are astounding. the actor/singer went from a boy-like 155 pounds to a manly 180 pounds. But what about those legs? Many jocks forget that. “The guys works his legs with no mercy,” Eric says. “He never wants to be the guy with skinny legs.”
It’s working, James is up for several major TV and movie roles.
