American fans of Downton Abbey, rejoice! Tonight (January 5) marks the premiere of Season 4!
It's been a loooooong wait but we made it through. Now PBS is rewarding us with a full two hours of early 20th century high jinks! Tune into PBS from 9 to 11 p.m. Sunday, January 5, for the Season 4 premiere (also known as Episode 1 and Episode 2 over in the United Kingdom).
In case you need a refresher on where everybody stood at the end of last season, we've rounded up some details with minimal spoilage. Of course, if you really want to know what's ahead, we've got plenty of information on the first episode and the second seeing as we watched the season while it aired in the U.K. (we just couldn't wait!).
In fact, we've got a whole roundup going of what Season 4 has in store but, you know, don't want to ruin it for you unless you're really worried about another car crash, which is totally understandable.
All that said, if you'd prefer just a brief overview of what the night holds, keep on reading. We'll keep out any major details but will be sure to warn you if you'll need to take tomorrow off because your eyes will be all puffed up from sobbing the night away.
In the first hour of tonight's premiere, the Crawley family is still reeling from the sudden death of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens). Six months have passed since his tragic accident, but his wife, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), can barely bring herself to look at their baby let alone wear anything but black. The family rallies around her and by the end of the episode there's a little sunshine breaking through the clouds.
The weather gets even better in hour two as Mary receives a message from Matthew that completely upends life at Downton. A secret is also unleashed downstairs and it involves one of the Abbey's most upstanding members!
What are you hoping to see from tonight's premiere? From Season 4 in general? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
