Dancing With the Starspro Derek Hough made DWTS history this year, winning Seasons 17 and 18, bringing his total Mirror Ball wins up to five, which puts him well ahead of any other of the other pros for total wins (no one else has more than two). Now, he's had a part in making a different type of history — his choreography helped Meryl Davis and Charlie White bring home Team USA's first-ever gold in Ice Dancing at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
As we've reported before, Derek teamed up with the Ice Dancing superstars after they reached out to him (they're big fans of DWTS) for help with their Olympic short program.
Clearly, Derek's knack for creating winning choreography in the ballroom translated to the ice, because Meryl and Charlie scored a new world record for that short program when they skated it on Sunday, February 16. That put them in a good position to clinch the gold, which they did yesterday, February 17, in a decisive four point win over 2010 gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada.
Derek spoke to ABC about working with Meryl and Charlie. "I like to do things that are really outside my comfort zone," he explained. "I picked up pretty quick that there are certain things you can and can't do on the ice, but really mostly [things] that you can do, that you can't do on a wood floor."
Derek also gushed about the champs, calling them "amazing human beings" who are "sweet and kind people." He added that he'd just finished texting the pair to congratulate them on the big win. "It's unbelievable. You know what I mean? Gold medal! How do you even wrap your mind around that?"
Congrats to Meryl and Charlie on a stellar Olympics — and to Derek for helping to make it happen!Source: ABC
