Alex has never kept it a secret: he definitely had a less-than-ideal childhood. Growing up, he was often separated from his siblings as he was shuffled between foster homes. And while the only real glimpse into Alex’s family life was when we met his brother, Aaron, in season 6, we may be able to gain a bit more of insight now that Daddy Karev is back in town.
Introduced as Junkie Jake, Alex’s father turned out to be a patient who turned up in the ER during the hospital’s fundraising gala. When we left Alex at the end of last night’s episode, his reaction to the results of the paternity test that confirmed his suspicions about the patient was volatile.
“We’re going to learn a lot about Alex’s past and about where he is now,” Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter. “He's been a character who has really struggled with his own morality and being a good guy or not being a good guy. He's gotten really successful at that, and it's going to be interesting whether he backslides in the face of having his dad here or not."
And Alex’s father — played by Dexter’s James Remar — offered some insight into the situation as well.
“They don't really know each other, and Alex only knows him as the guy that left him," James said. "Due to the character's problems, he hasn't really been able to be responsible to anybody that he loves. The guy is a drug addict."
We can’t wait to find out more about how Alex copes with the return of his father — and what we’ll learn about Alex himself in the process.
