Ears getting bitten off is pretty much par for the course on the wild world of Westeros — in fact, one of Game of Thrones' most noble characters will be taking a bite out of someone else's ear in Season 4 — but we weren't expecting to hear about it happening in the real world. Unfortunately for actor Clive Mantle, 56, life imitated art in a gruesome way last March. Today, the men who attacked him were finally put on trial.
Clive, who played Stark bannerman Greatjon Umber in the show's first season, was attacked in the early hours of March 24, 2013 while staying at a hotel. He was woken up at 4:30 a.m. by shouting in the hall, and when he asked the offending parties, Philip McGilvray and Alan French, to please quiet down, the result was a scene that really could be out of Game of Thrones.
The incident was described in court by Jolyon Perks for the persecution, who stated: "[Clive] told them he needed to get past and placed his hands between them, and tried to force his way through, perhaps not unreasonably considering the situation he was in. At this point they both decided to grab his arms and set about him. Both men threw a flurry of drunken punches, some landed, some didn't. Ultimately, it ended with him being dragged on the ground face down."
Ultimately, the struggle resulted in, as Jolyon Perks put it, "substantial part of [Clive's] ear being bitten off."
The trial is currently going on, with both defendants denying wounding "with intent."
This whole incident sounds pretty terrible to us, but the good news is that Clive Mantle was able to have the ear sewn back on. We hope he's doing well.Source: BBC News
