English pop star Ellie Goulding has been keeping busy stateside this year — making tabloid headlines alongside rumors of former flames (Skrillex? Calvin Harris?), touring in support of her deluxe re-release Halycon Days, and racking up chart-topping singles with songs including “Anything Can Happen,” “Burn,” and Calvin Harris’ “I Need Your Love.” And if the newest release from the singer-songwriter with angelic vocal delivery is any indication, Ellie isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Released as part of the upcoming soundtrack for Divergent, Ellie’s “Beating Heart” pays tribute to both the stylings of her first album (it’s reminiscent of that album’s title track, “Lights”) as well as the futuristic dystopia the movie takes place. Paired with jaw-dropping scenes from the movie, as seen in the lyric video above, both the dreamy production and haunting vocal performance come to life.
Divergent stars Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller and Kate Winslet in a story based on the novels by Veronica Roth. The series, expected to be the next big youth-oriented franchise, finds Woodley’s character Beatrice “Tris” Prior fighting to survive in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues — a world she doesn’t quite fit. The movie hits theaters March 21. The Divergent: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, featuring “Beating Heart,” is expected March 11.
