Ellen Page, the pint-sized actress known for her roles in Juno and the latest wave of X-Men films, has officially come out as a lesbian!
The 26-year-old star broke the news at the Human Rights Campaign's THRIVE, while giving a speech at the conference, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I’m here today because I am gay ... and because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility," says Ellen.
"It’s weird because here I am, an actress, representing — at least in some sense — an industry that places crushing standards on all of us," she admits. "Not just young people, but everyone. Standards of beauty. Of a good life. Of success. Standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me."
The Inception star says that she's struggled with fame: "You have ideas planted in your head ... I have been trying to push back, to be authentic ... but it can be hard," she says.
Ellen, you seem to be doing you just fine from where we're sitting! You're an inspiration to us all.
In her speech, Ellen thanked NFL player and "football hero" Michael Sam, who came out as gay earlier this year, as well as Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox.
Ellen Page landed her role as Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, but her big break came with 2007's Juno, playing an offbeat, pregnant teen opposite Michael Cera. She'll be reprising her role as Kitty in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, along with Jennifer Lawrence.
We're so happy for Ellen for having the courage to come out! Congrats, girl.
