Things are getting a bit nutty between Eddie Murphy and standup comic Brando Murphy. Brando is now suing Eddie for a whopping $50 million, claiming that Eddie is ruining Brando's career.
Earlier this year, Eddie's lawyer reportedly sent cease-and-desist letters to Brando, warning him to stop claiming to that Eddie is his father. The letters point out that Brando — who wears a mustache similar to one Eddie has had — changed his last name to Murphy and appeared in a stage show called Sons of Comedy with comic legend Richard Pryor's real-life son.
Now, Brando has launched a $50-million defamation suit against Eddie, claiming that the star of films like Beverly Hills Cop and Nutty Professor doesn't have a right to keep Brando from using is new last name. "The name Murphy is of Irish decent ... and not exclusive to Eddie Murphy, a 'Black Man' of African Ancestry and a purported African American," the lawsuit bizarrely states.
"[I] did not create [myself] and that the way [I] looks is an act of GOD," Brando continues about Eddie's complaints that Brando tries to look like Eddie. In addition, Brando claims that Eddie's people have threatened Brando's life. Yikes.
Eddie's lawyer responds to the lawsuit, saying, "This is an absolutely ridiculous lawsuit, and we are confident it will be immediately dismissed by the court." That seems like a safe assumption.
And here we thought that, if anyone were to sue Eddie Murphy, it would be for having to sit through the movie Norbit. Seriously, that movie is not good.
Do you think Brando has a shot at winning this case?
