Another day, another Duck Dynasty drama update. This time, it’s a 2009 video that surfaced yesterday (December 30), featuring controversy-stricken Phil Robertson advising men to marry their wives well before they’re out of their teens.
The speech is said to be from a Georgia Sportsmen's Ministry event, where the duck call mogul was invited to share his marriage and dating advice. And, per usual, Phil’s opinions are more than a bit... unconventional.
"Look, you wait 'til they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket," he declares in the video. "You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They'll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that, of course."
Paging Courtney Stodden! Wonder if she was in attendance at this event, as not two years later she got hitched to Doug Hutchison at the ripe old age of 16. But we digress.
Some of Phil’s other dating tips included in the speech: "Make sure that she can cook a meal" and "make sure she carries her Bible. That'll save you a lot of trouble down the road."
None of this should come as a surprise to avid fans of Duck Dynasty. The star has been open about his marriage to wife, Miss Kay, when she was only 15, discussing it most recently in his book Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander.
"Miss Kay was the perfect woman for me," he wrote. "I was sixteen and she was fifteen when we were married. Nowadays some people might frown on people getting married that young, but I knew that if you married a woman when she was fifteen, she would pluck your ducks. If you waited until she was twenty, she would only pick your pockets."
And though he admits this was intended as a joke, he’s only half-kidding: "Now, that's a joke, and a lot of people seem to laugh at it, but there is a certain amount of truth in it."
Up until now, the only reactions from Phil’s controversial made by the Robertson family have been through social media and official press releases. Tonight (December 31) we will finally hear from Phil’s son Willie and his wife Korie in person when they appear as guests on Fox News Channel’s New Year’s special. It remains to be seen if Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Bill Hemmer will be able to deliver any of the hard-hitting questions as hosts.
Tune into All-American New Year's Eve on Fox News Channel at 9 p.m. ET to see Willie and Korie speak out.
Are you shocked by Phil’s opinions on marriage, or is this pretty much par for the course at this point? Tell us your thoughts below.
