If we know one thing for sure it's that Downton Abbey is full of secrets, particularly secrets of the romantic variety.
Remember Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle) when they first started their clandestine relationship? And how could we forget Lady Sybil’s (Jessica Brown-Findlay) rebellious passion for her family’s chauffeur Tom Branson (Allen Leech)? Even Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Mary (Michelle Dockery) kept their blossoming romance under wraps until that fateful holiday blizzard. Honestly, secret seems standard when it comes to love in the halls of the Abbey.
Thankfully, it sounds like we’ll be pivoting back to all things romance in Season 4, after what we can all agree was a less than heartwarming Season 3. Already we’ve heard rumors that the widower Tom will find new love with a member of the staff while Lady Mary will be pursued by at least two different men. (Good luck, fellows. She’s a hard woman to woo post-Matthew.) The affairs won’t just be upstairs, though; a surprising new romance unveils itself among the Downton staff.
“You’d never think that!” the interviewer responds. “You wouldn’t, would you? An old stick like him,” Jim replies with a grin.
If you want to know more about the lucky lady, we have spoilers from Season 4 Episode 2, to air in the U.S. on January 5 during the Season 4 two-hour premiere on PBS.
