The news of Philip Seymour Hoffman's death was a call to action for Shawn Pyfrom — an actor best known for his role on Desperate Housewives as Andrew Van De Kamp. The 27-year-old penned a Tumblr post outlining his past struggles with addiction — and his newfound sobriety.
"I just read the news about Mr. Philip Seymour Hoffman, and against the advice of others, I had to write this open letter. I can't stay quiet anymore about this… I am an alcoholic and a drug addict. And yesterday I celebrated five months of sobriety."
Shawn confesses that his addiction kept hold of him for several years, writing, "I lived for drugs. I lived for other things as well. But drugs dictated the other things I lived for… I put myself in places I never would have ended up, otherwise, for the sake of getting high."
He admits that talking about his addiction publicly is not an easy decision for him: "I even question whether or not I should publish this as I type out these words. But if these words can encourage someone to hold on to their life… to keep [them] from ever using or to [help them] find the strength to stop, then it's more important that these words are shared."
Shawn also stresses that he doesn't judge anyone's lifestyle but he does warn against the dangers of drugs — to one's health and memory. "Every moment spent using drugs (alcohol included) is a moment stolen from your life. A memory you will only recall with vague reflection — through fogged glass. Leaving an imprint in your memory, like a stamp without its ink."
And now that he's sober, the actor-musician-painter is enjoying a creative renaissance: "My thoughts are clear. My body is energized. And the creativity now flows out of me, easier than it ever had when I was using. I wake up looking forward to my days, rather than looking for a way to get through them. I feel the life inside of me now."
So happy to hear he's better, and here's wishing him the best of luck in all his endeavors!Source: Shawn Pyfrom on Tumblr
