Dancing With the Stars 2013 added a new twist tonight with the “Switch-Up Challenge,” which was basically a dance marathon. During two rounds, couples had to adapt quickly to new music and dance styles, with one being “tapped out” at a time based on the judges’ thoughts about them. Points were awarded based on who was taken out when, with one point for the first, two for the second, three for the third, and four for the winner.
The first round kicked off with Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” and had Bill Engvall taking off his shirt as Emma Slater got crunk with him. Jack Osbourne tried to breakdance with Cheryl Burke while Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Sasha Farber mastered interesting spins and Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff went for quick steps.
Here’s what the first round scored:
1 point: Bill and Emma
2 points: Jack and Cheryl
3 points: Nicole and Sasha
4 points (winner): Corbin and Karina
For the second round, they kicked off with “Sexy and I Know It.” Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd were very sexy, while Val Chmerkovskiy and Elizabeth Berkley got silly. Derek Hough and Amber Riley were serious and Tony Dovolani and Leah Remini went for a lot of spins.
Here’s how the second round scored:
1 point: Leah and Tony
2 points: Elizabeth and Val
3 points: Brant and Peta
4 points (winner): Amber and Derek
Notably, when Brooke Burke asked Len to say why he crowned Amber and Derek as the winners, he wouldn’t give them a direct compliment! Instead, he applauded them all, saying the judges were looking for the “best transitions” and adaptations.
