Cory Monteith (Finn) and his father, Joe, never had a very close relationship. They only lived together until Cory was seven, when a bitter divorce with Cory’s mother, Ann McGregor, sent Joe out of the picture.
Ann and Cory’s girlfriend, Lea Michele (Rachel), held a private viewing of his body right before Cory was cremated, but they didn’t invite Joe...and he made sure to let people know that this decision made him feel “totally devastated.”
Now, Joe tells People that he still wakes up heartbroken every morning, wishing he could have had the chance to say goodbye to his son. "It’s just ripping my insides out and tearing me apart," he says.
The 63-year-old provides the magazine with a handful of photos of young Cory, from elementary to high school. His smile, that familiar grin: The photos are all unmistakably Cory. (Sidenote: We love all the different hairstyles he’s had over the years. From the awkward side-part to the overdone gelled look, little Cory was kind of the best.)
Joe hadn’t spoken to Cory for two years at the time of his death, but he reveals they had gotten a chance to talk back in 2011. Joe told Cory his side of the divorce story, and revealed things he said Cory just hadn’t known. "One year, [Cory’s mom] even sent back the Christmas presents that I had sent to the boys," Joe says.
We might not know all the facts about this complicated relationship, but it sounds like the two had had the chance to work things out before Cory passed. Joe might not have all the closure he hopes for, but at least he and Cory’s relationship didn’t end on a bad note.
