UPDATE: The Futon Critic lists Glee's return date for Season 5, Episode 4 as Thursday, November 7, 2013. That's a full month without new episodes.
By all accounts, Glee’s Season 5, Episode 3 tribute to the late Cory Monteith (Finn) was extremely emotional for the cast and crew to film. After spending so much time surrounded by thoughts of their friend and co-star’s sudden and unexpected death this July, there’s no doubt that everyone needed a bit of time off.
We’ve already heard that will go on a hiatus to allow everyone to regroup, and to give Glee’s writers figure out how to change the course of Season 5 now that the love of Rachel’s (Lea Michele) life is gone for good. But exactly how many weeks will go by without new Glee episodes?
The initial plan for Glee Season 5 was to have two solid blocks of new episodes, with a big winter hiatus in the middle. Cory Monteith’s death changed those plans, as producers decided to take time off after Episode 3 to work on the show’s future storylines. Luckily, it doesn’t sound like the hiatus will be all that long.
People is reporting that the show arranged for a two-week break after filming wrapped on the Cory memorial episode. The Cory tribute airs on October 10, and no official return date has been announced so far. But we can assume that the break will also be about two weeks. Frankly, we’re impressed that the show’s writing staff didn’t need more time than that.
Typically, October is known as a “sweeps month,” meaning it’s when networks use their ratings to set ad rates for the rest of the year. Needless to say, networks always want to have their most attention-grabbing shows on the air during that month. So this probably means we won’t be seeing any Glee reruns during this time.
Then again, Fox usually airs postseason baseball during October anyway, so a Glee hiatus during this time of year isn’t so unusual. Meanwhile, we look forward to the emotional tribute episode, and we’re curious to learn more about where the show is headed after that.
