Big Brother 15’s Aaryn Gries wasn't the only one to make insensitive "jokes" this season, but she had a chance to take responsibility for her own words.
Instead, after her eviction from the show last week, the 22-year-old college student defended herself by saying she didn’t even remember saying the racist and homophobic comments host Julie Chen read off, adding that if she did say them, she was just joking like Texans do.
That probably wasn't the best defense.
Many viewers took issue with Aaryn citing the South and, specifically, Texas for her comments. Big Rich Texas star Bon Blossman told TMZ, "I watched Big Brother this season, and was embarrassed that [Aaryn] brought such negative attention to one of the most friendly, welcoming states in the United States. … Aaryn's comments were an outrage. … This is NOT how we were raised in Texas."
Here are some of Aaryn’s comments:
• On African-American houseguest Candice Stewart: "Be careful what you say in the dark, might not be able to see the bitch."
• On Asian-American houseguest Helen Kim: "Shut up, go make some rice."
• On homosexual houseguest Andy Herren: "No one's going to vote for whoever that queer puts up."
"I feel horrible," Aaryn said at the end of her interview with Julie. "In Texas we say things... Sometimes we joke and we don't mean it, and I really feel bad that this is how it's being seen and this is how I've come across to people.”
Bon added to TMZ, "This type of behavior is not tolerated by anybody that I know ... and I was born and raised in Texas." She said Aaryn needs tough love or she won’t learn.
Aaryn is still in the jury house until the September 18 finale, when she’ll re-enter the real world. She was dropped by her modeling agency in the wake of her comments (other houseguests have also lost jobs after their own comments) and her mother has reportedly hired a publicist to help her daughter redeem her reputation.
It does seem like Aaryn has become the scapegoat for all bad behavior this season, but she really sank herself deeper with that Texas defense. Hopefully Julie will give equal treatment to GinaMarie Zimmerman, Amanda Zuckerman and Spencer Clawson for things they too have said in the BB15 house, even if some of the comments were just seen and heard on the live feeds, with CBS electing not to air all the bad footage.
