TU College of Law alumni are heeding the call for exemplary leadership in US federal courts. In December 2012, alumni John Dowdell (JD '81) and Danny Williams (JD '91) were each officially sworn into distinguished positions. John Dowdell was appointed as federal judge over Oklahoma's Northern District, filling a three-year vacancy after Terence Kern took senior status. A Tulsa native, John Dowdell has been with the firm Norman Wohlgemuth Chandler & Dowdell since 1983. His legal specialties include complex litigation and appellate litigation, but he has also provided indigent defense counsel. Senator Jim Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, who spoke at the confirmation on Dowdell's behalf, said, "Mr. Dowdell has the requisite experience and judicial temperament to make a fine judge." Danny Williams was also officially sworn in as a US attorney in Oklahoma. US Attorney General Eric Holder was present and spoke on Williams' behalf, vowing his "unwavering support" as he continues serving in this role, which Williams actually began four months ago after he was informally sworn in by the US Senate. After completing his law degree in 1991, Williams worked as a Tulsa County assistant district attorney and then shifted to private practice in 1993 at Charney, Buss & Williams, PC, where he remained for 20 years. Williams' extensive trial experience and good professional judgment were key factors in his nomination. Tulsa County District Judge Tom Gillert told the crowd at the ceremony that Williams "has the right stuff to be a force of change." TU College of Law would like to extend its sincerest congratulations to Mr. Dowdell and Mr. Williams. We look forward to seeing what they will accomplish within their prominent offices.
