Nestled in the Tulsa Oklahoma is what we call our "Jewel in the Rough" The Turkey Mountain Wilderness Area is a beautiful area in which to stage a fabulous trail race. The trails offer mostly single track paths with great views of the Arkansas River. The race will start at the Westside YMCA and 25K participants will do one 15.5 mile winding loop, while the 50K runners will do two loops.
The 10K course was designed to provide the most scenic areas that Turkey Mtn has to offer and we encourage those who have never done a trail run to enter this distance and walk, hike or run it a pace that will allow you to enjoy the scenery.
The 50K/25K Course:
Turkey Mountain is an "Urban Wilderness Area".You will find beautiful lush surroundings that run alongside the Arkansas River. As you approach from the north, you will be able to see it's peak that juts 300 feet above the Arkansas River. Elevation is between 600-900 ft. above sea level. Ninety-five percent of the course is on narrow single-track trails. Most of the trails are under a a canopy of deciduous tress and amidst a thick layer of vegetation The trails have the sand /gravel /rock surface common to this area and can easily be run on after hard rains. The course has varying degrees of difficulty. There are easy-going non-technical areas, mostly flat and thoroughly negotiable, and there are intense, highly difficult technical areas with short, hard and very rocky climbs. We will cut back most areas of the trail that have vegetation growing close to the path but beware that you will be brushing up against all types of flora. Trail shoes are not required, but if you have a pair it would be wise to bring them. There are no long hills and unless we have an extraordinary amount of rain there should be no stream crossings.
Turkey mountain has hundreds of trails that branch off into a spider-web of secondary and tertiary trails. The course will be HEAVILY marked, but as in any trail race you need to pay attention to the different trail markers, (ribbons, spray paint, flour etc.) One of the best ways to get lost is to follow another runner who is going the wrong way. If you do not see the a trail marker within 100ft, you are most likely off course and simply racking up bonus miles. If you do get off course you MUST back track and re-enter the course from the spot that you left. Anyone spotted cutting across adjacent trails will be disqualified. If you are breaking spider webs on this course, congratulations, you are in first place or you are off-course.
There will be four aid stations per loop with an average distance of 3.5 miles between aid stations. Our aid stations will offer an assortment of sweets, sandwiches, salty snacks and drinks. September can be very hot, so it is highly reccommended that runners run with at least one hand-held water bottle or other type of hydration system. Littering is strictly prohibited and may cause you to be disqualified. This includes GU packages and torn tops, Power Bar wrappers, candy wrappers or bags, or any item that was not on the course before you arrived. Please take all trash to the aid station garbage sacks. Volunteers are giving up many hours to help with this race, please take the time to thank them.
Participants will receive a great looking technical fiber shirt and be treated to hamburgers, hotdogs and other sncks after the race.
